Transition and Higher Education Services

AERI is proud to offer transition support services for students with unique strengths and challenges as they prepare for the transition to life after high school.  Our staff has extensive experience working with students with diverse needs who are beginning to think about transition planning and students who are anticipating graduation. Through direct instruction and a specialized curriculum, our Transition Support Services team assists students with identifying realistic post-secondary goals and provides coaching to assist in goal actualization.

Beginning to think about life after high school can be daunting for students and their families when an individual has a diagnosis.  We believe that through criticial and early planning, students will be prepared to achieve their postsecondary goals.  Regardless if a student is interested in attending college, or starting a vocation, our staff provide support throughout the process.  We help the student to examine strengths and concerns within the domains of executive function, mental health, independent living, communication, and socialization.

Beyond working directly with transition-age students, AERI staff offers trainings and workshops for high school educators and administrators.  Specifically, our trainings include:

Development of Self-Advocacy Skills

Parent Roles During the Transition Process

Understanding the Law: Differences Between IDEA and ADA

Overcoming Barriers:  Coaching Students Through the Transition Process

Community Resources

Utilizing the Brigance Transition Skills Inventory Assessment to Develop Goals

Independent Living

AERI offers psychological testing to young adults within Transition Support Services. We are able to collaborate with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) to make this possible.

AERI formed a partnership with Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) to offer a Summer Bridge Program and College Support Program in Harrisburg, PA. We have also partnered with Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) in South Portland, ME, and we have also developed an opportunity in the Pittsburgh area at The University School (TUS) in Shadyside, PA.

The HACC Summer Bridge Program offers a three-week summer program (scheduled for July 15-August 2, 2013) that supports high school students and recent graduates with the transition to post-secondary education.  Students explore the expectations of college and participated in learning activities to enhance the skills needed to be successful. The Summer Bridge Program at SMCC is two weeks in length, and will take place from July 29-August 9, 2013. The Summer Bridge Program at TUS will occur on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm-8:00pm, from July 9-August 13, 2013.
